Very Superstitious

This morning my lovely wife decided to look up the superstitions which are involved in New Year's Day. Here's what I learned:

1) The first person to walk into your house needs to be a tall, dark man (handsome is optional). He cannot have flat feet. Blondes and redheads are strictly forbidden.
2) No sweeping, or for that matter cleaning of any type. Absolutely no laundry is to be done.
3) Eat black-eyed peas and something green.

So what did we do about these? After racking our brains for a tall, dark friend to call, I gave up and had to go outside and get the paper, then ring the doorbell to be invited in. Luckily, I'm rather tall and somewhat dark. I do not have flat feet.

I was planning on doing the laundry while I was watching bowl games. I didn't. I still have lots of laundry. We loaded up the dishwasher as full as it could be, but we have not started it. And because my eldest son decided that tonight he was going to make us a gourmet meal, we have dishes stacked up to the ceiling.

Tracey made greens and black-eyed peas. I ate both. That was easy and has no after effect that I can tell given we have been doing so for 15 years.

Now, the first effect of these actions were that both Georgia Tech and Michigan lost their bowl games. Hence pissing me off. Tech's loss was the hardest to take. We had an 18 point lead and let it get away from us. Ooooohhh the pain!!!

We stayed up to see the new year in with Dick Clark last night and that was scary in and of itself. Dick should not be doing television any longer. If you didn't already know, Dick had a stroke about 2 years ago. His speech is slurred and sullen. It is depressing to see the man who I watched on Bandstand like that. I believe punting would be a good idea.

Countdown to the new congress starting, 2 days. Which means that I can officially gloat until such time as the Democrats in charge of either the House or Senate screw up. That could be by week's end.

I did get my moveon.org t-shirt last week for the work I did on Call4change. It says "2006 - Mission Accomplished" on the back. I will be wearing it proudly. Maybe all the calls I made during the elections made no difference, but if I got just one extra voter to go to the polls to vote to change congress I am happy.

Now, Boise State vs. Oklahoma. Boy, do I want Boise State to win. We'll see if my New Year's Bowl day completely sucks.

If so, I'm getting some new superstitions.
